Tennessee Valley Music Festival – 2022!

June 5th-11th, 2022

TVMF is a premiere music day festival for all levels of string students as well as intermediate and advanced woodwinds, brass, and percussion students.  You do not need to be a member of HYO to participate! We invite you to join the Huntsville Youth Orchestra for an intense and highly motivating week of music study!

SKILL BUILDING

Work with professional instructors and other students to build new skills, improve on your already existing strengths, and learn through new experiences in highly interactive sessions!

INSTRUCTION AT ALL LEVELS

Welcoming all levels of strings, intermediate and advanced levels of woodwinds, brass, and percussion, as well as an adult track this year!

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING

TVMF faculty are professional musicians from all over the U.S. that come to Rocket City to inspire and train our young musicians!

Location

All activities (except the Picnic/Camp meeting) will take place at Trinity UMC, 607 Airport Rd., Huntsville AL.

Tracks

Track I: Discovery – Students age 7-11 participate in Nimble Fingers, Nimble Minds, an introductory program for children with no string experience. Instruments are provided. Students may choose the violin or cello. Rental information will be provided for students who wish to practice at home.

  • Meets: 1-2pm, Mon-Fri. Students will play in the Grand Finale Concert on Saturday, June 11.
  • Cost: $105 ($115 after May 24)
  • Auditions: Participants should come to Trinity UMC at 2pm on June 5 to be fitted for an instrument.

Track II: Endeavor – A program for beginner and intermediate string students with some experience. After the audition, students will be placed in String Explorers, Prelude Orchestra, or Redstone Orchestra. Students in the Endeavor Track also receive masterclasses/sectionals and a variety of special topics.

  • Meets: 9am-3pm Mon-Thur and 9am-12pm on Fri.
  • Cost: $280 ($300 after May 24)
  • Auditions: Sunday, June 5, at 3pm.  Students will be placed based on audition results. All students should be prepared to play two minutes of music (etude or solo) that best demonstrates their tone, technique, and musicality. 

Track III: Atlantis – A program for intermediate and advanced students of all orchestral instruments: strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and harp. Students will be placed in the Cumberland Orchestra, Twickenham Symphony or Tennessee Valley Philharmonic.  Students in the Atlantis track will participate in chamber music, masterclass, and select a special topics class. 

  • Meets: 9am-4pm, Mon-Fri.
  • Cost: $325 ($350 after May 24)
  • Auditions: Sunday, June 5, at 3pm.  Students will be placed based on audition results. All students should be prepared to play two minutes of music (etude or solo) that best demonstrates their tone, technique, and musicality. 

Track IV: Enterprise – A program for adult string players who enjoy playing recreationally. Students participate in the Horizon Chamber Orchestra each evening.

  • Meets 5:30-6:45 Mon-Fri.
  • Cost:  $100, ($110 after May 24)

The Festival Orchestra – The premier ensemble of the TN Valley Music Festival, and is comprised of faculty, members of the Huntsville Youth Symphony, and other advanced students by invitation only. The Festival Orchestra rehearses on Sunday from 7pm-9pm and Mon-Thurs from 4:15pm-6pm.

Student Guidelines

No food or drinks will be allowed in rehearsals.  Students may bring water to drink between rehearsals. 

Students must bring the following to rehearsal:

  • Instrument
  • Music and any other music literature needed and pencil
  • Music stand
  • All necessary items needed for instruments (rosin, shoulder rest, end pin stop/strap, as applicable)

COVID-19 Statement:

From the beginning, our focus has been the safety and health of our employees and all students enrolled in our program.  Our board and staff are closely monitoring available information from the CDC, WHO, and trusted medical advisors.  As their recommendations change, we may update our guidelines as necessary.  Based on these recommendations, masks are now optional for all students and staff attending rehearsals and performances.

Concert Schedule / Information

All concerts will take place at Trinity UMC.  It is strongly recommended that all students take advantage of these concerts, whether they are playing or not.

All concerts are free and tickets are not required.

  • Thursday, June 9: Young Composer’s Forum and Festival Orchestra, 7pm @ Trinity UMC Sanctuary
  • Friday, June 10, Student Chamber Concert, 2pm @ Trinity – location TBD
  • Friday, June 10, Faculty and Intern Chamber Concert, 7pm @ Trinity UMC Sanctuary
  • Saturday, June 11, Grand Finale Concert #1.  Tracks I, II , and IV(Discovery , Enterprise, and Endeavor) 10am @ Trinity UMC Sanctuary
  • Saturday, June 11 Grand Finale Concert # 2. Track III and IV(Atlantis and Enterprise) 2pm @ Trinity UMC Sanctuary
